Welcome to the third edition in the series of the Water Cooler. This feature will highlight what’s hot, topical and up for discussion. Here we go.
Politics
Last week politics in the USA was great for a news story. I mean Jimmy Carter – the gift that keeps on giving, the Rep. Joe Wilson story got a run and Obama not granting FOX NEWS an interview. Oops how could we ignore ACORN?
Jimmy Carter
Carter’s presidency is no way to be admired. He ended his political career with one of the lowest approval rates in
history and has not been admired by many even after leaving office. His statement on Obama may have some truth to it but is not entirely what Obama wants to be hearing at this moment. If you recall, Obama did a speech on racism earlier in his presidency – which he got high points for doing, well executed. After months of that speech, Obama wants to think that his race is behind him. The fact is racism will always be present. We cannot ignore the colour of ones skin although we would want to think that we are going to start judging people by their heart and not their skin. Even Obama is wary to agree with Carter on this issue. The fact is Obama is pursuing political ideologies that are unpopular with republicans. They have deemed it fit to express themselves with tea parties etc. However, when you have a wide scale opposition march on Obama it makes people riled up and we have seen the various racial images that are present at these rallies.
The media is so driven by sensationalism that these images allow us to discuss and major in the minority ignoring the elephant in the room. The major issue that republicans and others are having is that the president wants government to take over health care. No matter what Obama does, he will have opposition. It is nonsensical to think that those who will not side with Obama are racist and have racial thoughts. Sorry Jimmy Carter we would rather agree with you on another issue, not this one.
ACORN
So if you lived on Mars for last week you would have missed the ACORN story driven by the most trusted name in news CNN. Oops if you were tuned in to CNN you would most likely have missed the story of the week but thanks to fair and balanced FOX NEWS they drove the story home when the other networks didn’t see it fit to cover it. This story is huge because of many reasons and most democrats are not seeing the significance of it. ACORN is a group that is supported by the government – taxpayers monies and provide homes for the less fortunate. A pretending thug and a prostitute went into the offices of ACORN across the USA to peddle a child prostitution ring and instead of being challenged by the ACORN employees; they opted to give these undercover journalists tips on how to carry out their illegal activities. If this isn’t news tell me what is. I try to be objective and when I see a wrong I call it by its name. News networks who claim they are charged to deliver what is important to people must refocus their organizations. Hint – CNN.
Obama TV
Obama’s presidency is currently lukewarm. He is bent on being popular but will pay the price for appearing so many times on television. The position of being President is by no means an easy task especially when you want to pass health
care reform. Today, September 20, 2009 Obama is appearing on 5 networks to push his health care reform except the top rated network FOX NEWS. The FOX network isn’t taking the snub likely and went after Obama calling his administration “cry baby” and “petty.”
Obama certainly had a choice of where he wanted to place his message but opting to cut FOX and including an unrated network was brave. Obama at this moment needs to be convincing the same people he is snubbing, those who follow FOX News. A recent poll showed that FOX has a more balanced viewership than CNN etc. Obama snubbing FOX is huge; it might be interpreted to be snubbing the American people.
I think Obama needs to relax a bit. He is so focused on being the face of the administration which he is but it will begin to affect him. He needs to send Gibbs and VP Biden etc to do talk shows. When he sells himself so cheaply people will not care to tune in when he needs them most.
Love & Relationship
Couples today have to juggle work and creating a balance at home in their relationships. The Water Cooler this week is suggesting an idea that will have both partners engaging in effective communication while rekindling that love at home. Most working couples find it hard after a long day at work to arrive at home to cook dinner and do all the home chores that one needs to do.
It is true, couples need to spend quality time with each other. One way they can achieve this is by cooking together. This is simple, easy and shares the stress of fixing the evening’s meal. Sharing the duties in the kitchen will enable both partners to become aware of what happened in their individual days and allow them to share experiences. You will be so surprised how far this discussion will take you. It will also get you to know things about your partner that will allow your bonding and relationship to grow.
Inspiration of the week
The weekend is already over and wow aren’t we ready for the week? Do you ever have a perfect day? Well most of us don’t. Something are always off and sometimes things go pretty well. For this week try your best to keep a positive thought. Activities and duties may not be perfect, a supervisor may get on your nerves and you may be pressed to
meet that deadline. Think about the positive in the situation – you are blessed with life, a job and a home – not to mention lunch. The moment you break away from your momentum other things will get off. You may begin to give a little attitude to your co-workers which may never be a good thing. I am not saying you will never face reality and notice the file isn’t opening or the report you thought you had finished is incomplete but hey, think of a solution and move on. Are you going to be stuck on the file not opening or beat yourself up for not finishing the report?

Ahhh I am in the middle of both. I may appear to be mostly republican though. But deep down I am also a proud democrat ready to defend government run health care.

ok, FOX NEWS fair and balanced? You lost a few cool points on that one. NO news media is EVER fair or balanced. Sensationalist talking heads like Glenn Beck, Hannity and Bill O’Reilly are not paragons of media as we once had in Walter Cronkite or reporters like Woodward and Bernstein. That is simply untrue
Jimmy Carter had a rocky President due to the oil crisis, and his depressing speech that arguable ended his presidency, Told americans THE TRUTH about the state of the nation and what citizens should be doing. And he HAs gained a lot of respect post-presidency thanks to the work the Carter Center has completed abroad in working to maintain fair elections. If he were credible and uninfluential, then his comments would have been ignored.

@Jalen
I would agree with you that news networks now are not fair and balanced but they pander to what is popular. I would also agree that in the past we could rely on the network presenters to do what journalists do but times have changed. Networks have based their presenters on personalities and ideologies because of ratings. There is no way I would hold Beck etc to be journalists, they are pundits whose role is to stir up controversy and discussions. They have tricked us into thinking though that they are journalists providing news fair and balanced.
Jimmy Carter
His comments were not ignored because he is a former president and his statements are important. I am not sure how much of his statements and works are adored. He was recently endorsed by Osama Bin Laden – his book “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid”. People are not holding him high these days and those racist comments make it worse.

I have to agree that I feel that Fox News is FAR from fair and balanced. I also don’t believe that they are the top-rated network. Keep in mind that they have often refused to air President Obama’s speeches.
I also have to disagree with you concerning President Carter’s post-presidential life and acceptance. He founded Habitat For Humanity, an organization that has helped thousands of people all over the world. He has achieved additional status as a humanitarian, and I applaud him for speaking out on this issue, even though it is an unneeded distraction for our current President.
All my best,
Beth

You Lie. lol
We can agree to disagree. Thanks for your thoughts.
Well based on the data FOX seems to get more viewers, we may not like it but it is the fact. They are far from fair and balanced but that’s their line.
I am sure Carter has done tremendous work for different organizations and his country. He statement was too strong, could have been softer a tad bit.

Not surprising that President Obama did not want to go in Faux News. As a network, I like Fox, they have become the fourth network, but as far as news and such, they are as far right as MSNBC is left. CNN is more middle of the road in my opinion.
As far as cooking together, we do that sometimes, mostly when I do not have to work. One of the things we want to do for retirement is build a bigger kitchen so we can cook up a storm

If its eating, we’re gonna need a gym.
I think cooking is a great activity for couples. If you build a bigger kitchen will you be hosting family and friends or eating all that food?
Thanks Ken.

I agree that there is just simply too much Obama. He has to plan a comeback like Britney Spears.

Jimmy Carter was articulating what any rational person would think when witnessing the antics of the Teabaggers, Birthers, screamers, and Whiners. There is a difference between those who have legitimate concerns over goverment expansion and spending vs those who like the President to Hitler, his policies to socialism, crying that he is trying to replace democracy with communisim and oh yeah he is a under cover muslim to boot. These people and the politicians who cater to them are who Jimmy Carter was refering to and I would have to agree with him, there is no rational explanation for their conduct and the motivation behind what they do stinks of racism.

Don’t fall for Obama’s tricks. Obama only did this for his ego. He’s doing this to keep America focused on H.R. 3200 introduced July 31= no one supports. The bills on the table are
H.R.3596 introduced Sep 17, 2009=no one cares about.
S.1687 introduced Sep 17 = A bill to prohibit the Federal Government, Obama afraid of this.
S.1686 – introduced Sep 17, A bill to place reasonable safeguards on the use of surveillance and other authorities under the USA PATRIOT Act. Obama ran from this.
H.Res.749 introduced Sep 17 = concerning the November election in Honduras, you keep hearing Honduras in the news, but Obama don’t explain why.
S.1684 introduced Sep 17, playing with bombers.
S.1683 introduced Sep 17, to recaptured taxpayer investments toward reducing the national debt. This is what Obama need to be talking about.
Did you hear him mention anything about this. Obama wants to keep us focused on Health Care Reform, while the senate and house are focused on passing bills in the other room. Another magic trick Obama is performing on stage. And the American people are watching his antics with awe. Look at the headlines, all about Obama on tv, nothing about the latest bill on the table.

I like Fox. They lean right but John Stossel was recently hired and he is a true Libertarian. Free market approach policy is my kind of news. Carter is a goof and that’s that. I suggest looking at http://healthcare.cato.org/ for some real reform suggestions. We have a choice to Monopolize in some form of single payer/ nationalized/ socialized or go to individualized plans without all the regulatory mandated burden meant to limit competition by special interests. I prefer the latter and think that is the American way to real reform. We see how government policy and govt created FED monetary policy got us in a financial crisis. Same with health care. Heck we have an unfunded liability in SS, Medicare/medicaid of 59 TRILLION dollars! Our health care needs work, but nobody can realistically call it free market. It is better called The Regulated sector. Free market would be like cosmetic surgery or Lasik or vitamins. All of which prices have gone down and quality up vs the regulated/socialized sector costs have been inflated.
The ACORN deal should have a full audit and investigation and funding cut. Thats that.
Ahh cooking together. I will do that with my wife. That will be very nice.
Sorry for my random rant on healthcare. I just did a college paper on this.

Hey Corve!
Good work on this piece you’ve put together here. I just want to put the view of Mr. Carter in perspective here. Granted, he put together the Habitat for Humanity program together. However he is very anti-semitic and very pro-Palestinian. With very little effort one can find out the totality of his bias. Clnmike might watch this short clip and then judge where real racism lies, instead of “fishing” for it just because people don’t agree with Mr. Obama’s policies.

Corve,
You are a good writer! I loved reading your views. Keep writing and working for change for the better.
I am one of those older guys who has traditionally voted for one party. That is changing! I am so angry now at the state of our government.
I have been embarrassed by that party that I have traditionally voted for and I have been embarrassed by the other party just as much. That’s partly my own fault.
I am convinced that if either major party had hold of all of congress … they still could not do good things for you, me and the rest of the American people. I am convinced that they would still be divided and in the pockets of special interest groups. It disgusts me and I feel this disgust growing in both good Democrats and good Republicans. I think it’s disgusting that congress can vote anything into law and it doesn’t effect their lives. I think it’s terrible that they can bankrupt social security and still walk away with their lifetime pensions.
They whole thing is corrupt to me. I want to apologize to you … for being part of a generation that allowed governments of republicans & democrats to heep debt on your generation. I believe there could be a revolution in your lifetime. Keep writing! Your good at it!

I’m very familiar with Jimmy Carter’s presidential ideologies as well as him on a personal level. He is a wonderful man, and one of the main reasons why his ratings were so low were due to his lack of interest in “politricks” and war. Our country is energized by lies, deceptions, destruction in any way shape or form (sad to say), and Jimmy Carter wasn’t going to feed into that…I’m glad he stuck to his ideas. I was very proud of him for saying what he said about racism, because it’s true. Often, when we as Blacks mention anything about racism, we’re quick to be labeled as lazy, crazy, or any other negative attributes; when a White person says it, it’s more likely to be received, thought about, and discussed. Jimmy Carter wasn’t deviating from the issue…he went for the apex, and not too many people, especially Whites would have the courage to do that…not for a Black person in politics.
Yes, there are ideas that the Republicans are disagreeing with, but at the end of the day, you can disagree with someone all day, long as that person is respected. No one has ever possessed the lack of decorum as these politicians have during that speech (his last one) on healthcare. Joe Wilson was thinking what every Republican was thinking (probably), but he didn’t have to carry on like that. People are doing these things…these blatant disrespectful tactis…to this President for a reason, and it’s not just because he is a Democrat.
It’s because although he is half White, raised by Whites, went to some of the finest educational institutions in America…he is still seen as a Black man and incapable of his position.

Well I have to say if I want news, I don’t turn to FOX. I don’t like the way they present stories and often find their newcasters to be idiots. I still support my decision to have voted for Obama. He is losing some points but if you look at what he walked into (the horrifying Bush years) I have to say he’s doing a lot with what he had to work with.
Thanks for stopping by my blog and being a follower!
