The University of Technology, Jamaica is not only known for delivering world class graduates but the university can take pride in knowing that they produce the best marketers in Jamaica. Not even its closest competitor can rival their academic delivery in this field. For the past 28 years, final year Marketing students are expected to complete the Marketing Seminar Module. This module, takes a practical approach to marketing, providing students with the relevant experience needed for the world of work. With the Seminar in April, students are expected to raise the necessary funds to finance all the expenses related to this event.
On Wednesday, March 24, 2010 the Marketing major class of 2009-2010 launched their Seminar at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. The programme was chaired comfortably by two students: Camille Sinclair and my high school pal Robert Whyte. The launch was very successful as major sponsor Supreme Ventures sponsored the seminar with $200,000. Present at this launch were lecturers, media houses, former Marketing Seminar students and members from the class of 2009-2010.
As a graduate from the programme you look for certain things. I can proudly say that this year’s group has stepped up and delivered like true Marketing Seminar students. I must commend them on their attire. It was not only professional but hot professional. I am an advocate for employees loving their jobs. Any employee who is dressed like this going to work would definitely feel good about themselves because the suit was hmmmm….it hit all the right notes. I don’t know much about fabric and fashion but the vest felt great. I am looking forward to the actual seminar day. The topics that will be explored sounds interesting and speakers that you want to hear from.
I wish all 133 students all the best in whatever they do. We are in a down economy and in a few months most of these students will be unemployed, joining the thousands that will graduate this year alone. I just hope that the Jamaican economy can rebound to make us all productive.
My favourite moment of the launch was the speech delivered by the guest speaker, Sheree Martin, Senior Assistant General Manager, Group Marketing & Communication Division at National Commercial Bank (NCB). She delivered an insightful speech, making reference to the marketing landscape in Jamaica and marketing practices at National Commercial Bank. Although the address was catered to the budding marketers in the room, experienced business professionals from corporate Jamaica could not ignore the truth and relevance of her messages. One thought from her motivational piece was that marketers should not ignore the appreciation for Research and the benefits from making decision from researched findings. It is a well known fact that in Jamaica, marketers do not base their campaigns off research and in no way evaluate how effective their campaigns were. It was an interesting speech and great to hear the benefits from a company that uses facts to guide its decision making process.
The Marketing Seminar will be held on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at the Jamaica Conference Centre under the theme Strategic Marketing: stimulating growth and sustaining development in declining markets”. Speakers will include David Azan, Karine Hamilton, Dennis Hickey, Ian Lyn, Janet Sylvester, Karin Cooper and Sydney Mclennon. For tickets contact the students at marketingseminar2010@gmail.com
You may visit their website at Marketing Seminar 2010. Below are some photos, while some are not amazing, they give you a summary of what happened. Enjoy.

I love it….great job guys:-) But for real its a pity that some will have to join us in the unemployment line, struggling for the few jobs that exist. At this stage the ‘fittest’ will survive or should I say those with concrete networking skills what we call ‘links’.
We live in a country where the demand for job far exceeds the supply. I never thought that I’d live to see the day that degree holders are like those who are leaving secondary school.
I love your blog Corve…continue the great work:-)
