The Twilight Saga Eclipse Review

Is Twilight the new Justin Bieber? The craze of the new series is intense and not only young teenagers are excited, mature adults are rushing to the cinemas to catch the frenzy. I am not a Twilight fan – I have not even seen the previous two films to understand what it is all about. If I did not see the previous films, you guessed it, I wouldn’t have read the books. I do know that vampires and werewolves were involved though. From Twitter I know there is a trending topic called #teamedward and #teamjacob based on the movie. Which side are you on? I decided to see the new phenomenon called Twilight Saga Eclipse (not to be mistaken for the other movie called The Eclipse which I reviewed a week ago) the third in film in the series.

Edward and Bella

Let’s talk about what I did not like in the film. I am not a fan of the acting, the performances. If you are watching the film Twilight Eclipse for the first time the acting may not be appealing and one may think that the acting is bad. But speaking with serious Twilight fans if I had seen the previous films then I would appreciate the acting in Eclipse. Nevertheless, I thought the characters were boring; there is no real energy in the movie. Imagine a love scene you can recall from a film you’ve watched, the lines before they make out where they are soft and romantic- the lines are delivered with that tone in Eclipse. Seeing that for two hours was annoying. Another thing I disliked about the movie was the ending. I mean you would have thought this would have been the end, hell no, there are others to come in the series.

In Stephenie Meyer Eclipse there are murders and kidnappings taking place in Seattle and there are fears of a vampire and werewolf battle. The high school students will be graduating soon (they are preparing for that) and there’s a huge debate going on with Bella (Kirsten Stewart) and her father over which guy to choose. That’s part of where we get #teamedward (Robert Pattinson) and #teamjacob (Taylor Lautner). For the entire movie she is seriously trying to decide which guy to choose – a vampire or a werewolf. In a bid to decide she kisses both guys to tell. Smart woman! I guess that is what this film is all about setting up Bella to decide which guy to choose.

The breakout actor for me with the best performance is Taylor Lautner (who I might add is featured in July’s GQ mag). His performance was engaging and I enjoyed his scenes immensely. The computer generated images were amazing, the fight scenes were also good. At those times the movie really picked up some energy but would be lukewarm when Bella and Edward appeared again. The supporting casts – well they were supporting, no one stood out. I expected more from Jane (Dakota Fanning) – she remained in the background. If you don’t believe me read some reviews of this movie.

Edward

I can see why this movie is a hit-It is a gimmick. This is marketing to teenagers at its best. Twilight is becoming Sex and the City – it just won’t go away. And it is a success because the actors are so young and resonate with young people who are looking for something to connect to. It appears that the stylists on Twilight cannot find shirts to cover up Taylor Lautner, who in most scenes shows off his 6 pack abs. It must be hard to be gripping those abs and delivering the lines so easily. I mean, I’ve seen enough of him half naked, he must be able to find a shirt. I want someone to literally shake Bella (Kirsten Stewart) because I swear she’s in a deep sleep. She needs to bring her scenes to life – two guys are fighting over you! I really enjoyed Robert Pattinson more in Remember Me.

Team Jacob

The truth is I wanted to be a Twilight fan, I wanted to jump and sing the movie praises but I am recognizing I am not cut out for this. If you haven’t read the book hmmm, don’t watch the movie, you might not appreciate it. If you haven’t watched the other two films, this one may be too much to digest. The movie is rated PG-13 and is over two hours. Skip this if you’re over 20, Disney kids will love this.

Rating: Two out of Five.

I liked reading an “outsiders” perspective of Twilight! I must admit that I’m a huge fan of this series and most fans are because of the extremely well-written books. I recommend reading at least the first Twilight book, it’s very very good. Like you, a lot of fans of the books (as well as the author Stephanie Meyer) were initially disappointed with the casting for various reasons but I think the lead characters do a great job. In this Hollywood era that loves to destroy/remake so many old movies instead of paying great writers to offer unique concepts, the Twilight and Harry Potter movies really stand out as the exceptions especially to this generation of teens and young adults. To me, the reason why the Twilight movies are great is precisely because the pacing of the movie is so different, almost like an independent movie or a foreign movie and also because the young actors are so good at restraining their emotions. It does come off as boring or flat to some but in most movies aimed at teenagers, actors tend to over-act which comes across as cheesy but the slower pacing, subdued soundtrack, and restrained emotion to me is what really makes the Twilight series stand out. In addition, they didn’t pick the prettiest actress to be the lead but they picked one who could relate to the average, everyday girl which was a genius move to me and another reason why the franchise is so successful. Another reason I really like the series is for the diversity of ethnicities in the characters…having Native Americans (such as the character of Jacob and his family/friends) in the leading roles is so refreshing and rare to see. Also, in the first and second movies one of the main vampires, named Laurent, was played by an African-American and it is just great to see such a huge movie incorporate diverse ethnicities and have them play smart, intelligent characters who are essential to the movie and who are not in subservient or stereotypical roles. But to sum up, to me the complexity of the story (and believe me, I’ve read ”Breaking Dawn” and it gets WAAAAAAAAAY more complicated between Bella, Edward, and Jacob in ways you can not imagine and that has never been written about in any other story in history before (very unique plot twists is all I will give away!)) and the writing as well as these actors playing such great restrained performances trying to tame each of their wildness and emotions inside makes for a very exciting, and very rare series of movies!
