I must admit that I'm a huge fan of this series and most fans are because of the extremely well-written books. I recommend reading at least the first Twilight book, it's very very good. Like you, a lot of fans of the books (as well as the author Stephanie Meyer) were initially disappointed with the casting for various reasons but I think the lead characters do a great job. In this Hollywood era that loves to destroy/remake so many old movies instead of paying great writers to offer unique concepts, the Twilight and Harry Potter movies really stand out as the exceptions especially to this generation of teens and young adults. To me, the reason why the Twilight movies are great is precisely because the pacing of the movie is so different, almost like an independent movie or a foreign movie and also because the young actors are so good at restraining their emotions. It does come off as boring or flat to some but in most movies aimed at teenagers, actors tend to over-act which comes across as cheesy but the slower pacing, subdued soundtrack, and restrained emotion to me is what really makes the Twilight series stand out. In addition, they didn't pick the prettiest actress to be the lead but they picked one who could relate to the average, everyday girl which was a genius move to me and another reason why the franchise is so successful. Another reason I really like the series is for the diversity of ethnicities in the characters...having Native Americans (such as the character of Jacob and his family/friends) in the leading roles is so refreshing and rare to see. Also, in the first and second movies one of the main vampires, named Laurent, was played by an African-American and it is just great to see such a huge movie incorporate diverse ethnicities and have them play smart, intelligent characters who are essential to the movie and who are not in subservient or stereotypical roles. But to sum up, to me the complexity of the story (and believe me, I've read "Breaking Dawn" and it gets WAAAAAAAAAY more complicated between Bella, Edward, and Jacob in ways you can not imagine and that has never been written about in any other story in history before (very unique plot twists is all I will give away!)) and the writing as well as these actors playing such great restrained performances trying to tame each of their wildness and emotions inside makes for a very exciting, and very rare series of movies!
